Dublin Design Festival
31 Oct—10 Nov

This year, Dublin Design Festival is a 12 day festival of design, taking place right across the city. Operating as a collaborative and participative umbrella network, the festival brings together principal industry organisations along with key national and International participants. A dynamic programme of events, featuring The Future, with the future at its heart, includes exhibitions, conferences, live events and more, all celebrating and examining the many facets of design and its importance to business, culture and society.

We invite you to feed in, to contribute, to participate. We plan to build on this year’s activities, to broaden audiences and to establish a model that can be rolled out nationally with regional hubs.

We look forward to starting this conversation with you over the course of the festival.

Speculative and Critical Design was once a marginal activity at the edge of design studies in the UK. Now, 20 years later, it’s an established field of practise and mode of design that is being utilised internationally by designers, companies and organisations to tweak out the implications of emerging technological and cultural shifts. This is an area of design that concerns itself with the future, and that looks at creating works that examine and probe at whats coming down the proverbial highway towards our daily lives. Often inspired by the ‘wicked problems’ of our time like climate change, social justice, and wealth inequality, SCD is one of the areas of design that hopes to incite change through discussion and conversations around the hopes and fears it presents; hopefully steering us towards more preferable futures for everyone.

This short seminar gives an overview of the field, common strategies and tactics, how it fits alongside other practises, the growing pains it’s encountered, and invites participants to try their hand at creating their own speculative design through a hands on workshop.

No experience or knowledge needed! Will be starting from the basics. Familiarity with design history and theory would of course be helpful but not essential. No materials needed either, just bring yourself and a very very wild, open and critical mind.
