Dublin Design Festival

This year, Dublin Design Festival is a 12 day festival of design, taking place right across the city. Operating as a collaborative and participative umbrella network, the festival brings together principal industry organisations along with key national and International participants. A dynamic programme of events, featuring The Future, with the future at its heart, includes exhibitions, conferences, live events and more, all celebrating and examining the many facets of design and its importance to business, culture and society.

We invite you to feed in, to contribute, to participate. We plan to build on this year’s activities, to broaden audiences and to establish a model that can be rolled out nationally with regional hubs.

We look forward to starting this conversation with you over the course of the festival.

Design Film Night: The Grand Budapest Hotel w. special guest Annie Atkins

Movie House Cinemas (Dublin Road, Belfast)

As part of Belfast Design Week 2016!

Lead Designer on the film Annie Atkins will join us for a very special talk on her work with Wes Anderson on the film. From the Mendl’s packaging, to the intricate Telegrams, to the patterns of the carpets, Annie will take us through the behind-the-screens process of creating props for film. Annie will also give some insight on her other works including Steven Spielberg’s ‘Bridge of Spies’. A great night for Wes Anderson fans, design enthusiasts and those wishing to break into the industry.

We really encourage you to come dressed as your favourite Wes Anderson character! Prize for best costume!

A little bit of info on Annie Atkins:

Born in Snowdonia in rural North Wales, Annie Atkins spent four years working in advertising in Iceland before making the leap in to film design in Dublin, Ireland, which is now her home.

Annie cut her teeth in filmmaking when she joined the crew of the historical drama The Tudors. She began to specialise in the creation of antique graphic props for the actors to use on set, and went on to make stained glass, royal scrolls, telegrams, vintage cigarette packaging, book covers, signage, and calligraphic documents for all kinds of period filmmaking. Annie was just finishing work on the Oscar-nominated animation The Boxtrolls when she got a call from Wes Anderson about ‘a movie set in a fictitious European country between the Wars’. She then spent the winter on the German-Polish border as the lead graphic designer on The Grand Budapest Hotel, gaining critical acclaim for her work from journals such as The Creative Review and Michael Bierut at Pentagram.

Annie now works from her studio in Dublin, where she has created graphics for Spielberg’s Cold War thriller Bridge of Spies as well as Ang Lee’s upcoming feature Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk. Her studio is now also open for workshops, where she teaches commercial graphic designers and graduates how to translate their skills to filmmaking.

Annie’s thoughts of working with Wes Anderson:

“Wes Anderson is the most experimental and hands-on director I’ve ever worked with, and I worked closely with him and his production designer Adam Stockhausen every day. The whole job was an incredible rollercoaster from the moment I got the first call from the producers, to the winter I spent with the cast and crew in the fictional Empire of Zubrowka, to the day I sat down in the cinema to watch The Grand Budapest Hotel for the first time. I doubt I’ll work on a more beloved film that pays so much attention to graphic design again in my lifetime, so not a day goes by when I don’t thank my lucky stars (and Wes and Adam!) for that opportunity.”
