Dublin Design Festival
31 Oct—10 Nov

This year, Dublin Design Festival is a 12 day festival of design, taking place right across the city. Operating as a collaborative and participative umbrella network, the festival brings together principal industry organisations along with key national and International participants. A dynamic programme of events, featuring The Future, with the future at its heart, includes exhibitions, conferences, live events and more, all celebrating and examining the many facets of design and its importance to business, culture and society.

We invite you to feed in, to contribute, to participate. We plan to build on this year’s activities, to broaden audiences and to establish a model that can be rolled out nationally with regional hubs.

We look forward to starting this conversation with you over the course of the festival.

Nordic Now

Nordic Makers

Opening on 26 October, Nordic Makers hosts Nordic Now, an exhibition showcasing contemporary design. Including work from Hunting & Narud (NO), Saana ja Olli (FI), Jenny Nordberg (SE) and others, the exhibition highlights emerging designers and small studios from the Nordic region who are exploring materiality, engaging in sustainable practice, or are redefining Nordic design.

Accompanying the exhibition is a seminar in dlr LexIcon on 26 October entitled ‘Nordic Now: Designing Sustainably and Sustaining Design’ with speakers including Dr Elizabeth Hatz of the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Knut Bang of Oslo’s Design and Architecture Centre (DogA), Troels Degn of the Danish Design School (KADK) and acclaimed Finnish designer Ilkka Suppanen. The seminar will explore sustainability in contemporary design and will also touch on how the Nordic countries support and promote design.

Lastly, the exhibition will be accompanied by a series of informal events in Nordic Makers, each shining a light on a designer from a different Nordic country. A presentation, conversation and drinks each Thursday night of the exhibition’s run will take a closer look at a designer’s practice and how it sits in a Nordic and an international context. The events will take place on 27 October and 3, 10 and 17 November.

The Nordic Now exhibition and events are curated and delivered by Nordic Makers and Aideen McCole with the support of the Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish Embassies in Ireland, NCAD and the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland. It is funded by the Nordic Culture Fund.
